Description

1880 - Echelon from Kershaw, G-10 Handle, Plain Edge Blade

Designed for great looks and solid performance, the Echelon features SpeedSafe® assisted opening and opens with a thumbstud that seems to float on air—hovering in the middle of an over-sized blade cutout. To add to the airy feeling, Kershaw used natural G-10 to create a semi-translucent handle that allows you to see the operation of the SpeedSafe® mechanism inside. The Echelon also features our Inset Liner Lock and new reversible deep-carry pocketclip for discreet pocket carry. Made in the USA.

About the Inset Liner Lock:

To build an Inset Liner Lock, Kershaw insets a strip of steel inside a knife’s handle—most commonly when the handle is G-10. Insetting the lock in this way enables us to create a slimmer knife, while still providing the strength and security of a locking liner.

Knife Specifications & Features:

SpeedSafe®, the patented, assisted-opening system built into many of Kershaw's best-selling knives. SpeedSafe assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or Index- Open system. (Index-Open uses a protruding portion of the blade's finger guard to give the user an alternative to the thumb stud. The user manually pulls back on the protrusion with the index finger to open the blade.)

The heart of the SpeedSafe system is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by "gravity." In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its halfmoon track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use.

Design changed May 20, 2013

The knife I received did not match the pictures. It looks like Kershaw went cheap and changed the milling around the hole where the thumbstuds are. Instead of a distinctive sharp milling, there's just this sort of oval hole. Opening was fairly difficult so I had to adjust the pivot so it would open easier, but now the knife blade is no longer centered and rubs against one side of the scales. It's an ok knife, but no longer as distinctive without the milling and the blade centering is annoying. It was relatively cheap so probably end up keeping it.
