Kershaw Knives and Ken Onion Knives have designed and produced some of the best production knives offered anywhere in the world today. Ken Onion started designing custom knives in 1991. The design that started it all was the Kershaw Chive. This small yet functional knife offered a little featured called “Speed Safe”, this patented, assisted-opening system that assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or by using the Index-Open system. The heart of the Speed Safe system is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by "gravity." In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half-moon track and takes over. This was truly a revolution in the knife industry. Many knife manufactures have tried to make their own quick opening system, but few have achieved the same results.
Since the introduction of the Kershaw Chive other popular models have followed such as the Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Blackout, and Kershaw Avalanche to mention a few. The Leek and Chive both offer the Index-Open variation of Speed safe with the Blackout and Avalanche offering a thumb stud opening system only.
